About the Data

The ICE detention data were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by the Deportation Data Project. This tool filters for detentions of individuals under 18 years of age. Records are deduplicated on unique identifier and book-in date. Some entries list multiple facility codes separated by semicolons; selecting any one code will return all records containing it.

Age is calculated from birth year and book-in date. 0 day stay length indicates that the child was in ICE custody for less than a day.

Stay length is calculated using the stay-level book-out and book-in dates, with a correction for records where the gap between stay-level duration and actual time in ICE facilities (summed across stints) exceeds 7 days. In these cases, stint-level duration is used instead, as the gap typically reflects time in ORR custody for unaccompanied minors rather than continuous ICE detention. This correction primarily affects pre-2025 records. Results are not sensitive to the gap threshold; varying it from 7 to 14 days changes the Flores violation count by fewer than 5 records.

Where no book-out date exists, departure date is used if available. Otherwise, the child is assumed to still be detained, and stay length is calculated through the date of the latest data release (March 2026).
